Dubrovnik International ESEE Mining school – DIM ESEE 2018 was held from October 15th to 20th in the Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik under the topic Deep intelligent mining with the participation of international experts for primary and secondary raw materials in the ESEE region.
The course gathered 40 participants, mostly MA and PhD students, from 13 different countries (Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine), representing 12 different institutions all around Europe, as well as 11 lecturers from 6 different institutions (AGH University of Science and Technology, Austin Europe GmbH , Montanuniversität Leoben, National TU Dnipro Polytechnic, Technical University of Kosice and Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten AG). Besides the lecturers, the School hosted one invited guest speaker, Dr Imre Gombköto from EIT RawMaterials.
The goal of this year’s School was to improve participants’ knowledge and skills that could enhance the competitiveness of the mining engineers on the labor market. During five days of academic program, participants managed to learn more and discuss about themes such as main challenges of deep mining, management of rock pressure, environmental issues, health and safety in deep mining, accessing and infrastructure in deep mines and case studies of relevant examples in the sector. There was also a creative and team-oriented aspect of the School, whereby participants worked in six groups on practical case studies, mentored by lecturers, and tested the theoretical knowledge gained during the lectures in practice.
Other than the educational aspect, the School also offered social activities aimed at integration encouragement, such as the guided city tour and half-day field trip to nearby town Cavtat and dinner at traditional Dalmatian restaurant.
